“Birth is not only about making babies.

Birth is about making mothers — strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength.”

Barbara Katz Rothman

Why choose us for your childbirth preparation?

There are three key things that are central to our approach at This Mother Can:

  1. Our comprehensive childbirth education program is based on the principle of hypnobirthing.

This essentially means understanding the connection between the mind and the body and using that knowledge to impact the way you labor with deep self-relaxation and practical, hands-on tools. You can read more about what hypnobirthing is by checking out Our courses.

  2. We believe that hypnobirthing can be beneficial for all women and all types of birth, and our courses are pragmatic and accessible.

We totally recognise that even the term ‘hypnobirthing’ can be a bit off-putting if you don’t know anything about it – it conjures up all sorts of images of elaborate and whacky stage hypnosis and, honestly, that couldn’t be further from what hypnobirthing looks like! Even once you get a handle on what it is, it can seem a bit ‘woo woo’ if you’re more of a pragmatic, down-to-earth type than someone who’s more comfortable with an alternative approach.

The truth is, the principles of hypnobirthing are totally rooted in science and the tools we teach are really practical and accessible. We teach the Calm Birth Method of hypnobirthing for exactly that reason - it’s grounded, modern, and very normal! You can read more about what sets the Calm Birth Method apart here. We believe so much in the transformative power of this method of birth preparation, and we are committed to showing how approachable it is, whatever your persuasion!

We also recognize that birth can unfold in a multitude of ways, and the assistance you may want or need (or not) is specific to each woman and her particular circumstances. Hypnobirthing skills can help support your preparation whether you think you want to have an unmedicated birth, know you’ll want an epidural, or are planning a scheduled c-section. We’ll help you and your partner to feel as informed, prepared, relaxed and empowered as possible, enabling you to make the choices that will allow you to own and enjoy (yes, really!) your unique birth experience.

  3. We are committed to making our courses fun and engaging, and to helping build community in pregnancy and early parenthood.

As an experienced teacher, Anna always has engagement front of mind when planning her sessions, and is constantly evolving her classes with new tricks, props and fun activities to ensure the learning lands and sticks!

We are also PASSIONATE about building community amongst people who take our courses. Pregnancy and early parenthood can be a wonderful time, but it can also be a challenging and sometimes lonely experience if you don’t feel supported. Our group classes are designed to be taken over four weeks so you have plenty of time to chat to other couples and hopefully establish friendships. We will also host a reunion session once the babies arrive for everyone to introduce their little ones and share experiences. All course attendees (whether completing a group or private course) also have access to a private Facebook group where we can share resources, discuss questions and make recommendations to others, and receive ongoing support from Anna through your pregnancy and into the early postpartum period.
